The Werribee Open Range Zoo (WORZ) project is a 20 hectare redevelopment of a portion of the existing zoo with the intention to create an industry leading elephant habitat, which is currently the largest facility of this nature in the southern hemisphere. The greenfield site was completely transformed as part of the project and consists of two elephant barns large enough to house complete bull and herd populations. Inside each of the barns are complex equipment used for both training and welfare to provide revolutionary care
to the animals.

The elephants were transferred from Melbourne zoo to Werribee into the new environment, where it will aid the growth in their numbers to a full population, large enough to resemble herd numbers in the wild.

The site landscape was completely transformed with undulating ground levels throughout with mud pits, sand pits and inclusion of two large elephant pools in the middle of the public visitor area. The WORZ project includes a significant fencing package creating five individual habitats for elephants, all complete with their own infrastructure such as feeding hoists, shade structures and drinking troughs.

Over 1.3km visitor path has been created through the habitats linking the old Zoo to the new development and show casing the elephant habitats. The public will have opportunity view the elephants swimming from a large, terraced seating area providing state of the art facilities not matched anywhere is Australia. The WORZ project also consists of all associated utility connections providing completely new supply to the site and also significant upgrades to the dating infrastructure of the old site.

Overall, the WORZ project has had exceptional performance against the agreed construction programme, consistently meeting each of the key milestone dates. Fairbrother along with Development Victoria and Zoos Victoria have taken all necessary steps in a collaborative manner to mitigate any potential delays with the project successfully meeting completion and hand over in the agreed timeframe.
