Fairbrother delivered the $15.3 million Notre Dame College Wellbeing Centre in Shepparton, creating a transformative new gateway and wellbeing hub for one of regional Victoria’s leading secondary schools. Constructed within a live educational environment, the project combined heritage restoration, demolition and new construction to deliver a contemporary learning and support facility that strengthens student wellbeing, accessibility and campus connectivity.

The two-storey centre brings together a diverse range of student services, learning environments and community spaces under one roof. The facility includes administration and staff offices, private counselling suites, learning diversity spaces, sensory and reflective rooms, collaborative learning areas, eight general-purpose classrooms, a commercial canteen and dining facilities. These purpose-designed spaces provide students and staff with a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports educational achievement, wellbeing and pastoral care.

A key feature of the project was the restoration and integration of the heritage-listed St Colman’s Building, preserving significant architectural elements including the historic façade and iconic bell tower while incorporating a new Notebook Service Centre. This sensitive blend of heritage and contemporary construction ensures the college’s history is retained while providing facilities that meet the needs of future generations.

The development is characterised by several complex structural and architectural elements, including a suspended post-tensioned concrete slab, precast concrete shear walls, lift core and a striking 43-column colonnade that creates a distinctive new arrival experience for the campus. Extensive landscaping, feature staircases and outdoor gathering spaces further enhance accessibility, campus circulation and opportunities for student interaction. Delivered through carefully planned staging, Fairbrother maintained uninterrupted school operations while undertaking complex construction works immediately adjacent to occupied buildings.

The result is a landmark educational facility that establishes a strong new identity for Notre Dame College and provides a lasting investment in student wellbeing, learning outcomes and community connection.
