A new home for Tasmania’s Defence of the Island: The Tasmania JackJumpers and Jewels have a new home, a purpose-built facility that will become the beating heart of high-performance basketball in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian JackJumpers and Tasmania Jewels have a new home, with the completion of a purpose-built High-Performance Training Centre in Kingston that will serve as the heart of elite basketball in Tasmania.
Delivered on behalf of Building Tasmania, the project reflects a shared vision to establish Kingborough as a leading sporting and recreation hub while supporting the continued success of the Tasmania JackJumpers and providing the ideal foundation for the Tasmania Jewels as they prepare for their inaugural WNBL season.
More than a training facility, the JackJumpers and Jewels High-Performance Training Centre has been designed to bring together elite performance and community connection. The single-level complex spans approximately 3,365 square metres and includes 49 purpose-designed spaces that support every aspect of athlete development, preparation and recovery.
At the core of the facility are two high-performance training courts featuring engineered maple sprung timber flooring designed to meet the demands of elite competition. Supporting these spaces are a high-performance gym, massage and treatment areas, recovery facilities and a range of specialist support spaces tailored to professional athletes.
Player wellbeing and experience have been carefully considered throughout the design, with dedicated lounges, change rooms and briefing areas providing an environment that enables athletes to prepare, train and recover at the highest level.
The facility has also been designed to support the broader club operation. Office accommodation for up to 50 staff, meeting rooms and breakout areas for coaching, administration and operational teams, while staff amenities including kitchens, dining facilities, laundry services and outdoor breakout zones help create a true home for the organisation.
Importantly, the centre has been developed with the community in mind. Dedicated access areas and changerooms allow local users to utilise the facility, reinforcing its role as a shared community asset and helping foster grassroots participation, pride and connection across Southern Tasmania.
Construction required a highly coordinated approach across multiple disciplines. A steel-framed structure and concrete slab form the foundation of the highly serviced facility, while externally the building features a combination of cement and metal cladding highlighted by bold JackJumpers branding that creates a strong visual presence within the community. Civil and landscaping works, including supporting infrastructure upgrades, have delivered benefits extending beyond the project footprint.
As with any complex development, the project presented challenges. Early geotechnical conditions and retaining wall requirements required additional investigation and design refinement to mitigate risk and ensure long-term durability. The team also successfully navigated programme pressures, authority approvals and the coordination of critical design documentation while maintaining project momentum.
Strong collaboration between Fairbrother, the client and subcontractors played a vital role throughout delivery. This approach also enabled the project to evolve, incorporating additional scope following confirmation of the Tasmania Jewels’ WNBL licence, along with future-proofing measures to enhance the facility’s long-term performance and durability.
Sustainability has also been incorporated through initiatives including a solar system installation and thoughtful material selection, creating a facility designed for the future.
