Craig Edmunds Awarded Life Membership by Master Builders Tasmania
Fairbrother Chairman Craig Edmunds has been awarded Life Membership of Master Builders Tasmania (MBT), one of the highest honours the organisation can bestow.
The recognition acknowledges Craig’s exceptional contribution to the building and construction industry over several decades, including his leadership within Master Builders Tasmania, Master Builders Australia, and his outstanding career with Fairbrother.
Life Membership is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated remarkable service, leadership and commitment to the industry over many years. For those who know Craig, the award reflects not only his professional achievements, but also the generosity, integrity and mentorship he has consistently provided throughout his career.
From Apprentice to Chairman
Beginning as a carpenter and joiner apprentice, Craig joined Fairbrother in 1989 as an estimator and contract administrator. Over the next three decades, he progressed through a range of leadership positions, including Manager of Fairbrother’s Northern Tasmanian Division, before being appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director in 2003.
Under Craig’s leadership, Fairbrother experienced significant growth and diversification. The company expanded its operations, acquired businesses including Degree C and strengthened its position as one of Tasmania’s leading construction companies while also growing its presence interstate.
Craig played a key role in the delivery of major projects across Tasmania and beyond, including joint venture projects, such as the Risdon Prison Redevelopment and the Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment.
After leading the business as CEO for 18 years, Craig transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman in 2021 and now serves as Chairman of the Fairbrother Board.
A Champion for the Industry
His association with Master Builders Tasmania began as a young apprentice when he was recognised as a Master Builders Tasmania Apprentice of the Year, an early indication of the dedication and work ethic that would define his career.
In 2015, Craig joined the Master Builders Australia National Board, representing Tasmania at a national level for a decade. His contribution culminated in his appointment as National President of Master Builders Australia from 2022 to 2025, making him only the sixth Tasmanian in the organisation’s 133-year history to hold the prestigious office.
Throughout his national leadership, Craig advocated for some of the industry’s most significant challenges and opportunities, including:
– Housing affordability
– Workforce shortages
– Apprenticeships and skills development
– Planning reform
– Industry productivity
His advocacy ensured Tasmania’s builders and contractors had a strong voice in national policy discussions and strategic decision-making.
A consistent theme throughout Craig’s career has been his passion for apprenticeships, training and workforce development.
Having started his own journey as an apprentice, Craig has remained a strong advocate for creating opportunities for the next generation of tradespeople and construction professionals. Whether through Fairbrother, Master Builders Tasmania or Master Builders Australia, he has consistently championed initiatives that strengthen skills, support apprentices and build industry capability.
Colleagues across the sector speak not only of Craig’s leadership and business acumen, but also of his willingness to mentor emerging leaders, share knowledge and support others to achieve their potential.
