Enforceable Undertaking

Our Commitment to Safety

At Fairbrother, we take safety seriously because people come before all else. One of our core values is People Above All Else, and our commitment is to provide safe workplaces where our people, subcontractors, clients and visitors can perform their work with confidence and return home safely each day. Safety is fundamental to how we operate, how we manage risk, and how we care for one another.

For more than five decades, Fairbrother has built its reputation on looking after its people, delivering high quality projects for its clients, and contributing positively to the communities in which it operates. We are proud of our long-standing commitment to safety and the strong safety culture that exists throughout our business. At the same time, we recognise that any workplace incident is one too many, and we remain committed to continually learning, improving and strengthening our systems to better protect everyone who works on our projects.

In relation to a serious workplace incident that occurred in 2022, Fairbrother entered into an Enforceable Undertaking with WorkSafe Tasmania. The undertaking reflects our commitment to continuous improvement and to sharing our learnings in ways that contribute positively to the broader construction industry.

Turning Learning into Action

The Enforceable Undertaking provides a framework for further strengthening our safety systems and building on the significant work already undertaken since the incident.

Our commitment includes:

  • Continued investment in safety leadership and capability across all levels of the business.
  • Ongoing training and development to strengthen hazard identification, risk management and contemporary safety practices.
  • Enhanced guidance materials and practical tools to support the management of high-risk construction activities.
  • Developing and funding an industry-wide training initiative through Master Builders Tasmania called Managing Height Safety for Supervisors to improve competency in managing work at height on construction sites.
  • Supporting the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation through a charitable contribution that assists vital research into spinal cord injuries and paralysis.

These initiatives extend beyond compliance. They reflect our belief that businesses have a responsibility to contribute to safer workplaces, stronger industries and healthier communities.

Our purpose: To provide a workplace founded on our guiding principles where our people can learn and grow to their highest potential.

Creating that environment requires more than policies and procedures. It requires leadership, accountability, trust and a shared commitment to looking after each other. Every person working on a Fairbrother project has both the right and the responsibility to identify risks, raise concerns and contribute to a safe workplace.

People Above All Else

At Fairbrother, people are at the centre of everything we do. Our core value of People Above All Else shapes how we lead, how we make decisions and how we support one another.

Community Contribution

As a business that lives and works in the communities it serves, Fairbrother recognises that its responsibilities extend beyond individual projects. We are committed to contributing positively to the wellbeing of our industry and the broader community through education, training, leadership and targeted community support initiatives.

The Enforceable Undertaking provides an opportunity to share learnings, support industry-wide improvement and invest in initiatives that help create safer outcomes for all workers across the construction sector.

Continuous Improvement

The construction industry presents complex and evolving risks. Fairbrother remains committed to continually improving its systems, strengthening its safety culture and sharing knowledge that helps improve safety outcomes across the sector.

We deeply regret that a person was injured as a result of the 2022 incident. The Enforceable Undertaking represents an opportunity to create meaningful and lasting improvements that reinforce our values, strengthen our business and contribute to safer workplaces across the industry.

Our commitment remains unchanged: putting people first, supporting our communities and providing a workplace founded on our guiding principles where people can learn, grow and reach their highest potential. Safety will continue to be fundamental to achieving that purpose.
