Fairbrother in
a joint venture with John Holland have been appointed as Managing Contractor
for the $37M Stage 1 of the University of Tasmania’s Co-Location
Project.
The University of Tasmania Co-Location Project is a Hobart CBD multi-level
building development that will accommodate the Faculty of Health Sciences
Administration and Tasmanian School of Medicine together with the Menzies
Research Institute in a dedicated facility promoting excellence in medical
research and teaching. The CBD site chosen, on the corner of Liverpool
and Campbell Streets in Hobart's CBD, is ideally located for fostering
links and collaboration with the adjacent Royal Hobart Hospital.
The new five storey building will include staff accommodation, teaching
and PC2 research laboratories, teaching / meeting rooms, a medical research
consulting area and amenities for both staff and students, and is expected
to achieve a 4 star Green Star Rating, signifying the building will be
a "best practice" facility from an environmental sustainability
and energy efficiency perspective.
John Holland / Fairbrother have worked collaboratively with the designers
Lyons Architects in realising their vision for this iconic building façade.
The façade incorporates coloured precast concrete panels with feature
architectural shaped finishes, integrally cast steel window frames and
purpose manufactured double glazed window units.
The new Menzies Research Institute has become a major fixture on the Hobart
skyline. With the concrete pour for level 6A, the roof level, recently
completed, the significant structural works involved in raising the iconic
new building are virtually complete. In coming weeks the substantial exercise
of removing a great deal of the formwork that has been underpinning the
structural phase will commence.
Significant emphasis on site will now turn to internal works and progressing
the finishes and fixtures for this sophisticated building. Currently,
internal works are focussing on the installation of glass up to level
4, and also the installation of plaster on levels 1 and 2. A multitude
of finishing trades will be involved in completing the internal works,
all of which are proceeding smoothly and on time.
