Facility (the Wilfred Lopes Centre). |
Fairbrother, in partnership with John Holland, was awarded the $87 million redevelopment of Tasmania's
Risdon Prison. This complex project involved the
design, concurrent construction and subsequent 15
year maintenance of a new men's prison capable of
accommodating 297 prisoners, a new Women's prison
for 46 inmates, and a 35-patient Secure Mental Health
Facility (the Wilfred Lopes Centre).
The project, which spanned almost two and a half years
but which was delivered 4 months ahead of schedule,
commenced with bulk earthworks and in-ground
services installation. Construction of the built form
occurred progressively over multiple work fronts, with
the erection of a building superstructure component
occurring every 2 weeks for a significant portion of the
build time. At its peak the project employed over 200
workers across 40 sub trades.
The new facility follows the 'campus' design which
has been heralded as a leading edge concept for
correctional facilities. This design encloses a large space
within a highly secure perimeter within which prisoner
and non-prisoner zones have been established.
Immediately following the construction phase,
Fairbrother's Facilities Management & Maintenance
Division were successful in winning the 15 year
maintenance contract for both the prison complex and
the Wilfred Lopes Centre.
