Port Sorell Child Care Centre

Fairbrother Developments

Port Sorell, Tasmania

Aesthetically pleasing

This child care centre on a greenfield site at Shearwater has much in common with a typical domestic construction. The building is aesthetically pleasing due to the combination of the overall design and the use of varying external wall claddings which provides a strong visual effect. The building features a gallery between the reception and play areas.
The building is constructed on a concrete raft slab, with timber framed walls, timber roof trusses, colorbond roof cladding and plasterboard wall linings. The home-like scale and feel of the building has been emphasised by the exposed timber verandah fronting the play areas and the use of domestic windows where possible.

Cost effective building

The fit-out caters specifically to the needs of young children, with the use of bright feature wall colours in play areas and carpet in play areas and practical vinyl used in wet areas. Aluminium glazed concertina doors provide added versatility between play areas.

Overall, the clever design and the selection of child-friendly finishes and domestic-scale building materials has ensured a cost effective building which at the same time is pleasing to the eye and in keeping with its local environment.
