PROJECT:

Boarding House (Burbury House)

CLIENT:

Hutchins School

LOCATION:

Hobart, Tasmania

State of the art boarding facility

This project involved the refurbishment of the 1960s-built Burbury House which is home to The Hutchins School boarding program.  Home to over 60 boys from Tasmania, other Australian states and overseas, the building has been converted into a state of the art boarding facility for students from grades 6 to 12.

Starting with the complete strip-out of the existing facility to the building shell and floors, the removal of asbestos was one of the first challenges encountered as is typical of many buildings of this age.

Other challenges included working on a busy campus where student is the primary concern, and limited materials access requiring manual handling of supplies and equipment.

Mix of traditional and modern finishes

The refurbishment phase encompassed construction of the Residential Tutors’ quarters in a self contained flat, the upgrade of laundry facilities including the installation of a three-storey laundry shoot, refurbishment of a large commercial kitchen, and installation of new shower and toilet facilities throughout.  A spacious central dining room has been tastefully redecorated with a mix of traditional and modern finishes and provides access to a deck which serves as an alfresco dining area.

Student accommodation comprises twin rooms for grades 6 to 11 and single rooms for grade 12 boarders, each one equipped with wireless internet access, single beds, cupboards, wardrobes, study desks and reverse cycle air conditioning.  In addition, Burbury House has a number of student study and social areas including games rooms and communal television rooms.
