Flexible Internal Layout

Fairbrother were contracted to construct new office administration, a large hardstand area and a major storage facility for Aurora on a 5.5 hectare site at Cambridge.
The administration building is orientated east-west maximising natural light, as well as spectacular views of the neighbouring coal valley and was designed as a steel post and beam portal frame structure to achieve flexibility of internal layout. Operationally, the building has been constructed to support 24-hour response.

emphasis on environment

Highlighting the major emphasis placed on environmental considerations, the building's air conditioning is supplemented during the day by passive solar heat gain and roof and wall insulation.
The main store is a visually impressive structure incorporating a 38 metre clear span and building length of 140 metres to achieve approximately 5,000 square metres of enclosed space. Being outside the portal frame span, the long roof span was designed as a tension structure supported by masts above the roof to achieve material efficiency and column free space.
